When it comes to building affordable housing, Rich Rozycki, CEO of CRATE Modular, says efficiency is a must. “What we’re doing is applying an assembly line automotive-type techniques to the construction of buildings. By doing that, you can eliminate a lot of the waste that goes into construction,” he said. “Whether it’s material waste, whether it’s labor waste.”

Rich also discussed CRATE's newest product line, a hybrid system of structural and cold formed steel that will be used in a four-story apartment, 48 unit permanent supportive housing complex going into Koreatown in Los Angeles, CA.

California-based company Crate Modular, for example, uses containers to make affordable multifamily apartments, temporary housing for people experiencing homelessness and school buildings.

Anchored off the Southern California coast, many people see a record-setting backlog of container ships. But others, like Amanda Gattenby of Crate Modular, see opportunity.

The project is located on a 4.2 acre site, a former parking lot that was slated to become a staging area for the construction of a new jail near downtown Los Angeles, The Hilda L. Solis Care First Village housing complex was conceived by NAC Architecture, and Bernards, a California-based builder and construction management company in collaboration with LA County's Department of Public Works.

The 64,000 square feet housing complex was completed in a record six months ready for occupation. The project offers 232 housing units, along with a common building that holds a commercial kitchen, dining area, laundry facilities and administrative spaces.
